Your Guide to Idaho Window Tint Laws

As the trusted tint experts for Caldwell, Boise, Nampa, Meridian, and all of the Treasure Valley, we've created this simple guide based on Idaho Statute 49-944 to help you understand the legal limits for your vehicle.

Tint Darkness: Legal VLT Limits

The key term to know is VLT, or "Visible Light Transmission," which is the percentage of light that must be able to pass through your window. Unlike some states, Idaho's rules are the same for all passenger vehicles, including sedans, SUVs, and vans.

Official Idaho VLT Limits

  • Front Side Windows: Must allow more than 35% of light in.
  • Side Windows (Rear of Driver): Must allow more than 20% of light in.
  • Rear Window: Must allow more than 35% of light in.
  • Windshield: Non-reflective tint is only allowed above the manufacturer's AS-1 line (usually marked on the glass) or within the top 6 inches.

Tint Reflection: How Shiny Can Windows Be?

Idaho law also limits window reflectivity to prevent dangerous glare. For all vehicles, the rule is consistent:

  • All Windows (except windshield): Must not be more than 35% reflective.

What Happens if You Get a Tint Ticket?

A window tint violation in Idaho is a non-moving traffic infraction. This means you'll face a fine, but it typically won't impact your license or insurance. You may receive a "fix-it ticket," requiring you to have the illegal tint removed.

This is where our commitment to our customers truly shines. We understand you want a specific look for your vehicle, and we provide the ultimate peace of mind.

The 808 Customs Ticket Insurance Promise

If you get a fix-it ticket for a tint we installed, our Ticket Insurance has you covered. We will remove the tint so you can clear the ticket. Afterward, return to our shop, and we will reinstall a legal shade of the same film for you, absolutely free. This service is included with our Carbon and Ceramic packages.

Other Key Idaho Tint Regulations

  • Side Mirrors: If your rear window is tinted, your vehicle must be equipped with dual side mirrors.
  • Color Restrictions: The law does not currently restrict any specific tint colors.
  • Legal Tolerance: The state allows for a 3% variance in VLT readings during an inspection.
  • Medical Exemptions: Idaho law allows for medical exemptions with a doctor's verification, permitting tint as dark as 70% VLT on the full windshield and 20% VLT on all other windows.
